Why does my laptop not charge?

I enjoy a Dell Insperon 6000, and it does not charge...When ever i unplug the laptop from the charger it shuts down!! how do i get it to charge again so i can give somebody a lift it off the charger once contained by a while?? please give me directions to fix it... Thanks
