iChat is by far the most integrated chat program on the Mac and, if your notebook is a recent one with the built-in iSight camera, will tolerate you do video-conferencing as well. Then again, it adjectives depends what your friends are using...not much good to hold a program no one else chats on.
i use Yahoo Messenger for Mac since adjectives my friends use Windows :)
