I know exactly what you are trying to do. You want to be able to play dvds from anywhere surrounded by the world.
I suspect that the chipset is soldiered in and you can't remove it and probably have several functions so it you remove it, your dvd will be toast.
The other option is download software that senses and removes the region settings on the DVD drive and doesn`t matter what its reading. I use DVD + CSS FREE. The software will also allow you to copy DVD's by defeating the anti copy code. The downside, is it costs roughly speaking $60 to $80,can't remember now. It works great. I guess you can download a trial performance of it. Just go too: www.dvdidle.com/dvd-region-fre... and check it out.
what are you trying to do ? play DVDs or unlock the drive ?
there's lots of free tools on the lattice to do both just do a google on it you'll soon find what you looking for
this benign of a bizarre question no? I would look for a contracted surface mount chip. it ie probably the largest chip on the board as it does more work than anything else on that board. you will be able to trace the surface circuitry out of the dvd reader/laser portion over to the chipset and from near likely some circuitry contained by the direction of the outputs on the rear of the device.
maintain in mind that dvd decode is an intensive task and the chip may be underneath a heatsink to give support to keep it cool and performing economically.
good luck, and cheerful hunting.
